About Me

Well hello there,

Thanks for stopping by it's just so darling to have you.  Settle down with an aperitif or what have you and learn a little bit more about me.

This blog is nearly 6 months old (today is 8th March 2012) and I thought it was high time I stopped putting off writing the about me. I know it's not a necessary part of blogging but the nosey person in me always like to find out who the person is behind the words and pictures so I feel very remiss for leaving you hanging.   It's not that I'm intentionally secretive and I'm certainly not shy but in between being very busy and the fact I find it quite hard to pigeon hole myself none the less it's high time you know who Miss D is.

The many nom de plumes I have are not down to wanting to live outside the system far from it.  It's actually something that has happened since my first day here on earth.  Basically, my parents who were who were young, carefree, living on love in a caravan and enjoying a great deal of Fleetwood Mac decided that they would call me Rehanon after the song.  They chose not to know my sex but they were convinced their first born would be a little girl and 9 months later they were right.

Fast forward a month and my Mum went to register me and when the registrar asked how to spell my name my dear Mother who hadn't had the fore thought to take the vinyl with her spelt my name phonetically - Re - ha - non.  As far as I'm aware I'm the only one in the world. When my Mum proudly showed Dad my birth certificate he pulled out the album and pointed out the error they decided in their typically laid back style well at least she's unique.  Ultimately, it didn't matter because pretty much from the word go my folks have called me Annie, which is one of the 20 or so names I have been called during my 31 years of life so far.  Others include Re, Ray, Foxy Brown, Detallita but I digress.

So you may think me greedy for assuming another identity under the guise of Miss Demeanour but when I was thinking about a name on a label that summed up my style then Miss Demeanour was perfect.  Just the right mixture of fitting and foxiness.  It is also a double win because when I finally break into the world of burlesque it is what I plan to use as my stage name ;-)

If you've managed to keep up with my thread so far (bad sewing pun unintentional as it is there's likely to be more so you've been warned) you'll know I'm a girl though technically at 31 I guess I should say woman but I don't feel grown up enough maybe I'll be ready when I'm closer to 35 or when I've done some more sensible things in my life.

Aside from that I inherited my parent's love of music, my Dad's shameless abandon for dancing in public, my Mum's bold use of colour and prints (especially a pair of lemon yellow Aztec balloon pants that went the same way as shoulder pads once the 90s hit) and their general laid back approach to life. Oh and I'm mad about cheese like the rest of my family.

In my day job when I'm not being Miss D I'm a freelance journalist who dreams of working for BBC6 and is trying to make it happen with wool.  So far I've knitted Mark Radcliffe a Hoxton bonnet and I'm currently crocheting Jarvis Cocker a tie in appreciation of him and his band's services to music and basically keeping me sane as a teenager.  My plan is that the sheer joy of their handmade gifts will leave them wanting more and will encourage them to create a vacancy for me, which would include using both my journalism skills and my craftiness.  I know it's out there but they say in these difficult times we need to think outside the box.

I started sewing completely by chance in February 2010 after being plagued with insomnia throughout January.  One night whilst flicking around the net I came across Tilly's blog and I couldn't contain my excitement when I saw what she had managed to make in a year after starting as a complete beginner.  That week I booked a beginner's sewing course here in Brighton and the rest as they say is history.

I have gained so much from sewing but one of the most positive aspects it that it finally cured my shopping addiction, which plagued me for years.  I think that deserves it's only blog post as it's quite a serious subject but needless to say the only negative about sewing I have is that I wished I would have come to it sooner but at 31 they're a lot of outfits left to rock ;-)

The other real positive of sewing as so many of you whose blogs I read talk about is the ability to define your style and not follow trends.  This is something that has always been hugely important to me and is reflected in my style icons who include Cyndi Lauper, Bettie Paige, Jarvis Cocker, Prince, The Specials, Marilyn Monroe and Joan Collins to name but a few.  These are people who have given the proverbial finger to fashion's trending monster and gone for a look that defines them.

This quote from one of my other icons Judy Garland says it better than I ever could, "Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate of version of someone else".  So being able to sew means that I'll always be able to me.  Now what could be better than that.

I feel I have waxed lyrical long enough and if I've timed it right you've hopefully not fell asleep and are just ready for a top up.

Before I go please do get in touch I love to hear from readers or general browsers and your thoughts and feedback can only be a good thing.

Until next time be fabulous,

Miss D xxx
